What’s the practical difference between single-wall and double-wall coated paper?

Single-wall consists of one layer of coated paper (e.g., 250gsm PE coated). It’s the standard for disposable cups – lightweight and cost-effective. Double-wall uses two layers laminated together, creating an insulating air gap. It keeps hot drinks warmer to the touch without a sleeve and provides a premium feel. Both are available in all coating types.

Is PLA coated paper truly biodegradable? Does it work on standard cup machines?

Yes, PLA coated paper is industrially compostable (certified) and biodegradable under the right conditions. It performs very similarly to PE on cup forming machines – the heat-seal temperature is slightly lower (around 120–150°C), so a simple machine adjustment is usually sufficient. We recommend testing samples first.

What GSM do I need for an 8oz vs a 16oz cup?

General guideline: For 8oz cups, 170–210gsm single wall is common. For 12–16oz cups, 250–300gsm single wall provides enough rigidity. For 20oz+ cups, we recommend 300–350gsm single wall or double wall construction. Heavier GSM prevents buckling when filled.

Can you print my logo on the sheets before cup forming?

Absolutely. We offer custom logo printing on the outer side of the sheet. Using food-safe, low-migration flexo or offset inks, we can print up to 6 colors. The printing is done before or after coating depending on the design requirements. Just provide artwork, and we’ll match your brand colors.

Are these sheets completely waterproof? Will they leak after 30 minutes?

Yes, our coated paper sheets are engineered to be waterproof for the typical lifespan of a disposable cup (several hours). Cobb testing shows water absorption < 2 g/m². For hot beverages, the heat-sealed seams are the critical point – our coating ensures strong seam welding, so leaks do not occur.

What are the minimum order quantities (MOQ) for custom sizes?

MOQ depends on the coating type and GSM. Typically, for custom sizes and custom logos, MOQ starts around 1–2 metric tons. For standard sizes, we can often offer smaller trial quantities. Samples are always available free of charge for stock items.

Do you have FSC certification and recyclability documentation?

Yes, we can supply FSC-certified kraft paper upon request. Additionally, we provide technical datasheets, food contact declarations, and documentation regarding recyclability / compostability based on the coating type selected. This helps you with your own sustainability reporting.

Water-based coating: is it really plastic-free and suitable for hot cups?

Water-based coatings (dispersion coatings) contain no plastic polymers – they are often made from starch, proteins, or synthetic latex that is not classified as plastic. They provide good water and grease resistance, though for very hot (≥90°C) and long-duration applications, PE or PLA might be more robust. It's the fastest-growing segment for brands aiming for plastic-free claims.
