What are PET plastic cups? Are they safe to drink from?
PET plastic cups are drinking containers made from Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET/PETE), identified by the #1 recycling code. Safety: For single-use and cold beverage applications, PET is widely recognized as safe by major global health authorities like the FDA (U.S.) and EFSA (Europe). It is BPA-free and designed for use with cold liquids, posing no risk of chemical leaching under normal conditions.
What is the difference between PET and PP plastic cups?
The choice between PET (#1 plastic) and PP (#5 plastic) depends on your application:
- PET Cups: Offer superior clarity and a glass-like appearance. Ideal for cold beverages like juice, soda, and ice water. Note: Not suitable for hot liquids.
- PP Cups: Have lower transparency but are heat-resistant (up to 120°C / 250°F). They are suitable for hot coffee or tea and are microwave-safe. Conclusion: Use PET clear cups for cold drinks and PP cups for hot beverages.
Can PET cups be used for hot beverages?
No, it is not recommended. PET plastic has a heat deflection temperature of around 70°C (160°F). Filling them with boiling water or very hot liquids (like hot coffee) can cause the cup to warp. In extreme and prolonged heat exposure, there is a potential risk of antimony leaching. For hot drinks, please consider our PP cup series.
What is downcycling? Are your products environmentally friendly?
"Downcycling" refers to the process where food-grade PET cups, after being recycled, are often turned into lower-value products (like polyester fiber for clothing or carpets) rather than new food-grade containers due to contamination concerns. Despite this, we are committed to sustainability:
